How Do The Locals Dress In Costa Rica?

Western dress is common in most of the country. However, Costa Ricans generally dress conservatively. Shorts are usually not worn in cities, however, in the more touristy areas, especially beaches, shorts are acceptable. They should not be worn in restaurants. Strapless dresses are only acceptable for evening events.

In regards to business attire, men should wear a conservative dark suit. In warmer climates, a jacket is optional. Women can wear a dress or skirt and blouse for formal business meetings, but it is far more common for women to wear pants to work. Costa Ricans are much more formal and serious than other Latin Americans. Therefore, keep jackets on during business meetings.
