Is It Necessary To Speak Spanish?
The primary language in Costa Rica is of course Spanish, however it's not totally necessary that you speak the language. Although we do highly recommend it to be able to get the full experience of being in another culture, most tourist areas are generally English speaking and quite easy to communicate and get around in.
There are not many countries where the people aren't absolutely delighted for you to try out their language. If you use just the word for 'thank you', they'll be impressed. If you know more about their language, even if you are not fluent, you'll find yourself learning more about the real people, not the ones shown to us in movies. They are exactly as curious about us as we are about them.
Learn a few phrases in the local language, or carry a phrase book with you in case you need to signal for help. Make a note of emergency telephone numbers, including your hotel, the nearest embassy or consulate, and the local police department.
